Children in Guatemala are carrying deep emotional scars from trauma, neglect, and violence.  Many of them struggle with depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of self-harm. Nearly half feel trapped in a cycle of worthlessness, unable to thrive at school or at home.  Teachers, overwhelmed by burnout, cannot meet the immense needs of their students. Parents lack the tools to guide their children through these struggles. The emotional toll on families, educators, and children is devastating.

 

ChildCare International is partnering with three schools facing some of the toughest mental health challenges in their region. Together, they are creating safe spaces where children receive not only education but also emotional and spiritual support.

 

The psychological support provided to Horeb Christian Mixed School in 2025 delivered impactful services across preschool, primary, and basic levels, addressing 70 student cases involving academic, behavioural, emotional, and family challenges. Through assessments, therapy, parent and teacher training, and student workshops, it achieved measurable improvements: a 50% reduction in aggression, 85% case improvement, and retention of students who were close to dropping out of school. Institutional protocols were established, teacher capacity strengthened, and community satisfaction reached 95–100%. Testimonies from parents, students, and staff highlight the impact of this program that integrates Christian values and fosters a supportive school climate. We want to build on the results achieved so far and continue supporting students who suffer from mental and emotional distress.
